ABOUT
Takahagi Beach Garden was a seaside leisure park in Takahagi, Ibaraki, Japan. It closed its gates in 2000.
Few records of the place survive. We are preserving it — together with the stories people still remember — as playable 8-bit minigames for the Game Boy.
GAME PURPOSE
When a local landmark is demolished, it rarely stays in public records. It fades away little by little, surviving only in people's memories. This game is a digital-archive experiment that preserves those "town memories" in playable form.
Playing it helps pass local culture on to the next generation.

GAME 01
The true story
Back then, bowlers kept their own scores by hand — and that little fact became the game itself.
How it plays
A scoring game where you tally the frames bowled by park guests. You're not the bowler — you're the scorer. And adding up strikes and spares is trickier than you'd think!
GAME 02
The true story
The original track was lined with old tires, and a ride cost about 100 yen — an easygoing attraction everyone loved.
How it plays
A lap-based racing game on the tire-lined course, recreated just as it looked back then.
GAME 03
The true story
For a time it was the longest pool in the prefecture, and it even hosted swim meets — all with the Pacific Ocean spreading out right in front.
How it plays
A competitive swimming game set in that huge pool, once the prefecture's longest. Swim the full length one more time.
GAME 04
The true story
Inspired by the bird-shaped playground ride that stood in the parking lot, and by the park's location right on the Pacific.
How it plays
A shooter set out on the Pacific Ocean, racing for the goal. Two true details — the bird ride and the seaside — combined into one game.
GAME 05
The true story
A roller rink stood right by the beach, overlooking the Pacific. Its oval course is still clearly visible in aerial photos from those days.
How it plays
Skate laps around the seaside oval and see how many you can finish without falling. Rumor has it the Skate Gang Trio drops by now and then.
GAME 06
The true story
People would sometimes climb over the fence from the beach, and sweeping up the sand they tracked in was a real chore — a bit of staff lore from those days.
How it plays
A first-person shooter where you drive off fence-hopping intruders with a water gun. Defend the park's peace — and the cleaning crew's sanity!

CHARACTERS
The game world is home to a cast of original characters. If you spot them around the park, go say hello.
The park's cleaner. Deck brush in hand, she polishes the grounds spotless, day in and day out.
A bowling-alley regular. Proud owner of a red personal ball — and yes, she keeps score by hand.
Queen of the pool. Her daily routine: one morning swim across the prefecture's longest pool, then a long, lazy sunbath.
A wild child with a water gun in each hand. Spot him on the summer beach and you're getting soaked.
The go-kart speed demon. Always keeps a 100-yen coin in his pocket, ready for one more lap.
Three roller-skating delinquents who rule the rink as their turf. Once they challenge you, there's no backing out.
A faceless bellboy who appears in the dream you have when you stay at the hotel. Who — or what — he is, nobody knows...
